Remove silence from a recording

Find the pauses in a recording and cut them out. The file is analyzed first and you see how many quiet stretches would go and how many seconds that saves; adjust the threshold and the minimum pause length until it looks right, then cut. A little silence is left on each side of every cut so words are not clipped.

How it works

  1. Choose a file and set the threshold (how quiet counts as silence) and the minimum pause length.
  2. Review the stretches found: count, seconds saved, and the list. Change the settings and analyze again if needed.
  3. Cut and download. Video files can keep their picture (re-encoded, limited to 10 minutes of output) or come back as audio.

Questions

Which threshold should I use?

Start at −35 dB for a typical voice recording. If room noise is being kept, try −30 dB; if quiet words are being cut, try −40 or −45 dB. The analysis step shows the effect before anything is cut.

Does it change the sound?

The kept stretches are joined and re-encoded to the output format you choose; the audio itself is not processed in any other way. For a lossless result choose WAV or FLAC.

What happens to my file?

It is uploaded to our server, processed there, and both the upload and the result are deleted automatically 60 minutes after the job started. Nothing is kept, nothing is used for anything else, and nobody looks at it.

What are the limits?

Files up to 500 MB and 3 hours long. One job runs at a time on the server, so at busy moments yours may wait a little.

Do I need an account?

No. There is nothing to sign up for and nothing to install.
